The scene is based on a detail of an engraving by Giulio Bonasone of The Death of the Children of Niobe (see Johanna Lessmann, Italienische Majolika aus Goethes Besitz: Bestandskatalog der Klassik Stiftung Weimar, 2015, p. 224, for a dish in Goethe's collection with the same image in reverse. The author cites other dishes from the same workshop painted with the same image, including one in the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum depicting a fuller rendition of the subject (Johanna Lessmann, Italienische Majolika: Katalog der Sammlung Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum Braunschweig, 1979).
