A Venice maiolica istoriato dish, workshop of Domenico da Venezia, circa 1560-80

Painted with a landscape scene depicting two women embracing, below drapery at the top and Cupid emerging from clouds firing an arrow to the top right, 25.4cm diam. (fine crack to glaze surface)

Footnotes

The scene is based on a detail of an engraving by Giulio Bonasone of The Death of the Children of Niobe (see Johanna Lessmann, Italienische Majolika aus Goethes Besitz: Bestandskatalog der Klassik Stiftung Weimar, 2015, p. 224, for a dish in Goethe's collection with the same image in reverse. The author cites other dishes from the same workshop painted with the same image, including one in the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum depicting a fuller rendition of the subject (Johanna Lessmann, Italienische Majolika: Katalog der Sammlung Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum Braunschweig, 1979).
