A Faenza or Pesaro maiolica deep dish, late 15th century

Painted in the 'Gothic' style in shades of blue, ochre, manganese and green, the centre of the well with a radiating stylised flower motif surrounded by line borders, the rim with stylised angled foliage, 29.3cm diam. (restored)

A dish attributed to Faenza in the Victoria and Albert Museum has a similar border around the rim (accession no. 1221A-1901). Fragments from Faenza dishes of similar date are in the British Museum, illustrated in Dora Thornton and Timothy Wilson, Italian Renaissance Ceramics, A catalogue of the British Museum collection, 2009, vol. I, p. 31, nos. 6 and 7.

A fragment of a Pesaro dish that has a very similar central motif is illustrated in Andrea Ciaroni, Maioliche del Quattrocento a Pesaro, Frammenti di storia dell'arte ceramica dalla bottega dei fedeli, 2004, no.42.
