Footnotes

Provenance:
London art market.
Anonymous sale; Bonhams London, Antiquities, 7 November 2002, lot 147.
Property from a Princely Collection, acquired at the above sale.

Colour band glass bottles, like the above lot, were made using canes of glass similar to those used to make mosaic glass vessels. The glass maker would assemble these canes into a pattern before heating and fusing the canes for blowing. For further discussion on the type see D. Whitehouse, Roman Glass in the Corning Museum of Glass, Vol I., Corning, 1997, pp.39 & 40.
