Footnotes

Provenance:
with Jack Ogden Limited, London.
The property of an American private collector, acquired from the above, 9 April 1984.

Many horse and rider figurines like this one have been found at the Sanctuary of Apollo Hylates, in Kourion, Cyprus. While some riders drive chariots, most sport helmets and shields, emphasising the martial aspect of Cypriot male identity that the worshippers wish to convey to the deity as they gather in adoration.
