Footnotes

Provenance:
with Isao Kume, Kyoto.
The property of an American private collector, acquired from the above, 9 April 1997.

The above example has a long snout with incised banding, the leg joints are well defined. For another example with long cylindrical muzzle, cf The Metropolitan Museum of Art, obj.no.69.61.2. For an example with a long snout and prominent leg joints, cf D.G. Mitten & S.F Doeringer, Master Bronzes from the Classical World, Mainz 1968, p.38, no.19.

Horses were highly prized as a status symbol with horse statuettes of varying quality and detail found at sanctuaries in great quantities, deposited as votive offerings to the gods. This is a fine example of the type.
