There is a similar but larger bowl attributed to the Polyteleia Painter in the Metropolitan Museum, New York, obj. no.1997.36. Vessels of this shape were used to dilute wine with water at symposia, and were frequently decorated with animals such as goats, lions, panthers and mythological sphinxes.
