This figure bears a resemblance to Athena Lemnia, with her downcast eyes, the modelling of the aegis with gorgoneion and the serpents on her drapery. Phidias created the eponymous bronze statue in the 5th Century B.C. for the people of the island of Lemnia, as a dedication at the Acropolis in Athens (see A. Stewart, Greek Sculpture, vol.II, Yale, 1990, no.313).
