Surcoats, gua or shorter coats known as waitao were worn over robes in most formal and informal court occasions as well as domestic or private occasions such as weddings, birthdays, births or New Year celebrations. As they fell outside of the consideration of official court costume regulations, this type of garment often demonstrated personal preferences rather than rank or occasion. Nevertheless, the eight roundels above a wave border suggest that this style of surcoat was worn by ladies below the rank of imperial clanswomen but above the nine military and civil ranks. Each roundel features a large peony bloom and butterflies conveying the wish to enjoy long life, wealth and honour.
