The mark on the base of this box identifies it as a product of the Tan Yue He workshops, one of the most renowned silversmiths in Bangkok in the late 19th century. The exquisite quality and execution of the workmanship is representative of works made almost exclusively for use at the royal court in the form of royal regalia, utensils, and commemorative items. Such objects were also made to be presented as valuable gifts to foreign rulers.

Paul Bromberg notes that Tan Yue He workshops employed only the best silversmiths who produced silver objects of outstanding quality commissioned by the palace in the 1870s and 1880s, see Paul Bromberg, Thai Silver and Nielloware, Bangkok, 2019, pp. 202. Compare with a blue-enamelled silver-gilt water bowl and tray and a blue-enamelled silver-gilt water kettle, illustrated ibid., nos. 5.01 and 7.11.
