清雍正 銅錯金銀獸面紋弦紋爐 「雍正年製」款

This exquisite small gold and silver-inlaid censer belongs to a small group of objects made in precious metals such as gold, silver, copper or bronze during the Yongzheng period. The gold and silver inlay on this small vessel is superbly controlled, with the highly stylised and complex design achieved with very thin gold and silver sheet under complete technical and artistic control. The refined quality of the casting and the inlaid design is reminiscent of the finest works produced by the metalworker Hu Wenming, who was active in the late 16th century. Among Hu Wenming's works is a group of small vessels of archaistic shapes and designs detailed in gold and silver inlays, see, for instance, a gold and silver-inlaid censer in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, published in Rose Kerr, Later Chinese Bronzes, London, 1990, pl.41, and a gold and silver-inlaid tripod censer, from the collection of Hugh Moss, sold in Sotheby's Hong Kong, 7 April 2014, lot 205.

The four-character reign mark, written in elegant regular script, is representative of similar marks found on wares made in the palace workshops. The same mark can be found on only a handful of precious metalwork pieces, among them a small gilt-copper box and cover made in the shape of a peach, with a similar four-character Yongzheng mark, sold in Christie's Paris, 10 June 2009, lot 120, and a small gilt-copper lozenge-shaped box and cover, sold in Sotheby's Hong Kong, 6 April 2015, lot 118.

Saleroom notices

Please note that the analysis of the metal shows that the censer is made of silver and not bronze as described in the catalogue. Veuillez noter que l'analyse des métaux suggère que le brûle parfum est en argent et non en bronze comme indiqué dans le catalogue. 敬請注意,此拍品經金屬分析確認其材質為銀,而非目錄所示為銅。
