A RARE YELLOW AGATE WATER DROPPER IN THE FORM OF A PHOENIX
18th century
Well carved following the natural shape of the stone, the recumbent bird with its head turned back grasping a lingzhi branch in its beak, with wings closed and laid against the body, finely detailed with feathers, with curled tail feathers and feet carved in low relief, a small circular aperture to the back opening to a well-hollowed receptacle, the stone an even caramel colour with scattered speckles of red.

The soft caramel yellow colour of the agate resembles tianhuang, the most prized stone among artisans and collectors for its auspicious yellow colour. The quality of the carving of this small washer evokes the works of Zhou Bin, one of the most famed carvers of the 17th century. Zhou was inspired by the form and qualities of the natural stone and his most subjects are mostly landscapes, flowers, pines and bamboo as well as figures, all based on the concept of xieyi or idea painting. In a similar way, the artist who carved this piece of yellow agate was inspired by the colour and shape of the stone which he skillfully used in his highly naturalistic rendering of a slumbering phoenix.
