The dramatic composition of this scene represents the high point of narrative panels from Gandhara. Here the two left monks are actively engaged in discussion with discernible expressions, and the torch bearers above suggest direct connection to the now missing central figure. Compare the treatment of the monks with a relief panel in the British Museum collection, published in Zwalf, A Catalogue of the Gandhara Sculpture in the British Museum, 1996, no. 293, p. 175. Also compare the with a panel of the First Sermon in the Calcutta Museum, published in Marshall, The Buddhist Art of Gandhara. The Story of the Early School: Its Birth, Growth and Decline, 1980, fig. 117, pl. 82.
