A Mamluk style illuminated frontispiece bifolium from a manuscript of the Qur'an
Near East, 20th Century

Arabic manuscript on paper, two leaves, recto double-page illuminated frontispiece in colours and gold, comprising sura al-Fatihah and the opening of sura II, al-Baqarah in six lines per leaf written in muhaqqaq script in gold within cloudbands, verso a fine full-page illumination preceding the beginning of sura I, and text leaf from sura II with 12 lines to the page written in muhaqqaq script in brown ink and some gold, verse-endings marked by gold roundels with blue and red dots, illuminated marginal device, in card mount
each leaf 380 x 300 mm.; mount 480 x 720 mm.
