Footnotes

One of Edward Munch's favorite models was Birgit Prestoe who first came to his studio in 1924 on her own accord. Her long figure and distinctively assured attitude inspired many of Munch's images and his first works of her have a notable shift in style. She was known for being open about her experiences as a model, a profession that was regarded as scandalous at the time.
