Footnotes

Richard and Elaine Lieberman collected passionately for more than four decades. Born and raised in New York City, they lived through the Great Depression and World War II, and these events shaped their worldviews and endured as cultural reference points. Much of the art they acquired is evocative of the era in which they lived: the rise of American culture, commerce, and power during the 20th century. Their personal aesthetic was grounded in Americana, from the great city where they were born, to the optimism of a mid-century nation emerging from a world war, and the West Coast's diverse cultural landscapes. At the same time, some pieces in the collection reach back toward their families' European roots. Throughout their lives, they identified strongly with the culture and heritage of the Jewish people, and this in part motivated them to collect works that explore the human condition by such artists as Marc Chagall, Käthe Kollwitz, Martin Lewis, and Francisco Zuñiga, among others.
