'The figure projected or suspended in space, which grew out of the image of St. Catherine straining against her wheel, was an essential aspect of Butler's iconography between 1953 and 1959; its dynamic rhythms can still be felt in the painted bronzes of the 1970s' (exh.cat, Richard Calvocoressi, Reg Butler, Tate Gallery, 1983, p.26).
