This work is a study for the oil on canvas Trooping The Colour, 1958-9 (Tate collection, London). Trooping the Colour depicts the military parade which takes place before the monarch every June on their Official Birthday. In this work, the Late Queen can be seen on the right-hand side, on horseback. William Roberts served on the Western Front during the First World War, and his military service began on Horse Guards Parade.
