Provenance
Property from a private collection, England.

Born in Kharagpur, West Bengal, Kar initially trained in sculpture with Giridhari Mahapatra, a traditional Oriya sthapati or temple-carver, and learnt painting under Kshitindranath Mazumdar at the Indian Society of Oriental Art, Calcutta.

His exposure to Western art in Paris in 1938-39, however, transformed his outlook, where he studied at the Académie de la Grande-Chaumière, and at the atelier of the Italian sculptor Victor Giovanelli. He subsequently spent 10 years in England, during which he made his award-winning sculpture 'Skating the Stag' in 1948. He then returned to mainland Europe to work on the conservation of paintings at Musée du Louvre, Paris.

Untitled (View of Sceaux in the Suburbs of Paris) and Untitled (Vase of flowers) resembles the works of the European artists, whom he would have seen during his time in Europe and were painted within years of each other.

He was awarded the Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award in the Republic of India in 1974 and was decorated with France's highest civilian honour in 2000.
