THREE GILT-METAL SCHOLAR'S OBJECTS
Japan, late 19th-early 20th century
Comprising a rectangular-section censer supported on four tall, cabriole legs and flanked by a pair of vertical handles sweeping up from the narrow sides, each side of the body cast with a central panel of birds and flowers in relief, the corners accented with vertical flanges, the shoulder, neck, and rim with decorative bands, the principal motifs picked out in gilt against a black-patinated metal ground, the openwork cover surmounted by a 'Buddhist lion' knob; a square-section incense holder supported on a tall foot and rising to a petal-form rim, the vertical sides each cast in high relief with flowers, gilt allover except for the black-patinated frames on each side of the body; and a rectangular small box and cover, the cover centered by a panel cast with a flowering tree branch in high relief, the panel and the four stepped legs on the box all gilt, the remainder of the box and cover patinated black.
