A CARVED WHITE BISCUIT PORCELAIN BRUSHPOT
Impressed 'Chen Guo Zhi Yin' seal mark
Of cylindrical form, deftly carved around the body in various levels of relief with a horse resting under the weeping willow beside the stream, the horse portrayed with powerful body accentuated by a pronounced ribs, further detailed with finely incised manes and a bushy tail, the underside bearing the marker's mark within a square. 9cm (3 1/2in) diam.

Chen Guozhi 陳國治 (circa 1820-1860), was considered as one of the greatest craftsmen of the time, who was a native of Qimen, Anhui province, and was renowned for his ability to carve landscape scenes on porcelain with the intricacy and elegance of those found on paintings. He was active during the Daoguang and Xianfeng reigns and may have worked for the imperial court.
See a yellow-glazed 'Eight Horses of Mu Wang' brushpot, also bearing a similar four-character mark of Chen, previously in the Quek Kiok Lee Collection, later sold at Bonhams London, 7 November 2019, lot 171.
筆筒圓身，直壁，平底內凹成淺圈足，足底鈐陽文四字篆書款。通體素胎不施釉，外壁浮雕裝飾。見溪水旁有一匹駿馬悠哉地在垂柳下歇息，駿馬雕刻立體精細，體型勻稱，鬃毛整齊，絲絲可數，神態栩栩如生。
陳國治，安徽祁門人，活躍於道光至咸豐年間，是景德鎮雕瓷名匠，或曾於御窯製瓷。陳氏善於在瓷板上雕刻山水人物，深淺適宜，神形俱備，饒有畫意。清人許之衡在《飲流齋說瓷》中曾有記錄：「雕瓷之巧者，有陳國治、王炳榮諸人。所作精細中饒有畫意，其仿木仿象牙之制，尤極神似。至於仿漆之器，精雕花紋，所塗之釉，又極為似漆，或謂竟髹以漆者。」足可見陳國治在清代雕瓷藝術中的地位。
參考一件黃釉穆王八駿圖筆筒，同刻「陳國治作」篆書模款，為郭克禮舊藏，後售於倫敦邦瀚斯，2019年11月7日，拍品編號171。
