A Qajar underglaze-painted pottery tile panel depicting men in prayer
Persia, 19th Century

of rectangular form with a curved top, comprising twenty-four tiles decorated in polychrome on a white ground, the lower rectangular panel with a hanging mosque lamp and three groups of men in three different stages of prayer with prayer rugs, enclosed within a lobed niche with scrolling foliate design and quatrefoil motifs containing birds to the spandrels, with concentric borders of dots, floral vines, and inscriptions; the upper semi-circular panel with the façade of a domed mosque, bordered with dots, floral vines, and inscriptions; in a mashribiyya wood frame with a painted wood spandrel
each tile 15.5 x 15.5 cm.; the frame 142 x 72 cm.

Formerly in situ in the summer residence of Hugh Grosvenor, 2nd Duke of Westminster (1879-1953), Isle of Wight, UK. Believed to have been acquired in Persia by an earlier resident in the early 20th century.

Inscriptions: a fanciful inscription stating that the panel was made during the reign of Abu Sa'id Bahadur Khan in the year AH 786 (AD 1384-5).
