A Qajar cuerda seca pottery tile panel depicting two youths
Persia, 19th Century

of rectangular form, comprising twelve tiles decorated in polychrome on a white ground with two youths enjoying a picnic in a garden with drinking vessels and a simurgh in a tree, enclosed within a multi-lobed niche, each spandrel with a lion in combat with a deer, the border with floral and foliate vine motifs, framed
each tile 23 x 23 cm.; the frame 98.5 x 75 cm.

Formerly in situ in the summer residence of Hugh Grosvenor, 2nd Duke of Westminster (1879-1953), Isle of Wight, UK. Believed to have been acquired in Persia by an earlier resident in the early 20th century.
