A rare Sultanabad pottery jug
Persia, 13th/ 14th Century

of inverted piriform with slightly splayed foot, waisted tapering neck, and strap handle, the body decorated in cobalt blue and black on a cream ground with three speckled deer on a ground of floral and foliate designs, the rim and shoulder with bands of floral and foliate motifs, the lower body with cobalt blue panels, the handle with cobalt blue stripes

Footnotes

The present lot has an unusual form relative to the extant category of "Sultanabad ware" created in the Ilkhanid industrial centre of Sultanabad (modern-day Arak). A similar cream animal subject with black dots can be seen in a bowl featuring a speckled ibex sold at Bonhams, Islamic and Indian Art, 18 June 2013, lot 44.
