Footnotes

Provenance
The Collection of Bahram Mirza "Sardar-i-Massoud" (1885-1916), Paris, thence by descent.

The sgraffiato technique, along with the ochre and green colour scheme of the present lot, was used for a broad period of time across a large area, from 10th Century Persia to 15th Century Italy. Examples of Ayyubid dishes from Syria with a similar palette are in the British Museum, London (1931,0716.1 and 1937,0317.5) but the deeply rounded form of our bowl is more reminiscent of Persian bowls from the Timurid period.
