Theo Waddington, London

"I'm an art dealer, born and bred"
(Theo Waddington)

The Waddington name is synonymous with the London and international art scene and Theodore Balfour Waddington was born in Dublin in November 1943. He is the son of Victor Waddington, the art dealer who played a pivotal role in progressing the cause of modern art in Ireland, and the younger brother of Leslie Waddington, also an art dealer.

Growing up, Theo was surrounded by art and artists such as Henri Matisse and Henri Hayden, and important figures of Irish culture. He and his brother played chess with Samuel Beckett when they were in Paris, and the Waddingtons were family friends with Jack Butler Yeats. "I don't remember when Yeats wasn't part of my life," Theo says. For his 13th birthday Theo received a present of a small Yeats titled The Birds Are On The Move, endearingly inscribed "From the youngest Yeats to the youngest Waddington."

It was therefore hardly surprising that Theo joined his father, uncle, and brother in the business, and learned how to be a successful art dealer before heading off to Canada where he took over his uncle's gallery in Montreal, before opening another in Toronto and then New York. Later, when Victor became ill, Theo also took over his father's gallery in London. At one stage, he had five art galleries and at least 40 staff.

His infectious enthusiasm, charm and friendliness led to a thriving business. Artists on his roster were varied and included Matisse, Dufy, Hayden and Pascin, together with top Irish names Yeats, le Brocquy and O'Neill, and Kenneth Hall and Basil Rakoczi of the White Stag Group.
