Gold Painting No.9 was exhibited in Patrick Scott's first exhibition of his series of gold paintings in the Hamilton Gallery, London in 1965. It remained in the artists own collection until 2003 when he gifted it to the filmmaker Sé Merry Doyle on completion of his documentary film Patrick Scott - Golden Boy. This painting exemplifies Scott's synthesis of the richness of gold leaf with the rawness of unprimed canvas and tempera and his use of simple elemental geometric shapes, which result in a zen like contemplative composition.
