E.W. Cooke made a number of visits to Ireland, and as John Munday notes, 'it was in the south-west of Ireland that Cooke.. commenced his series of highly-finished pictures in oil to illustrate the chief geological features of the British coast' (John Munday, E.W.Cooke, A Man of his Time, Woodbridge, 1996, p.231).
The artist visited Valentia Island in 1858 to record the progress of the Atlantic submarine cable operation, as well as producing a series of detailed studies. For other views of Valentia, painted in 1858, see Slate rocks Valentia Id. and Glanbane Bay, Valentia Harbour (Op.Cit., pp.230 & 262, col.ill.).
