Footnotes

Provenance
Spencer Stanhope family, Cannon Hall, Barnsley and thence by descent to the present owner

The present composition is inspired by Canaletto's The Old Horse Guards from St James's Park, c. 1749, now in The Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation and on long term loan to the Tate, London (no. L02305). The artist of the present work has updated Horse Guards to the white stone design that was built in the 1750s and still stands today.
