A good mid 19th century eight day gilt engraved brass strut timepiece
In the style of Thomas Cole, retailed by Phillips Brothrs. 31, Cockspur Strt., London
The arched rectangular case engraved all over with flowers and foliage on a striped ground, the fancy shaped, hinged handle set on an applied strap, over shaped sides and stylised feet centred by a pivoted engraved support which is able to twist 90 degrees to offer an upright position, the rear of the case also fully engraved and set with a sprung U-shaped strut to offer an angled position. Signed in copperplate script Phillips Brothrs. 31, Cockspur Strt., London either side of the sliding cover which opens to allow for regulation. The florally engraved silvered Roman dial with minute track and blued steel fleur de lys hands set in a shaped brass mask with engraved floral decoration on a hatched ground. Wound via a male key. Ticking, together with a double-ended setting/winding key. 17cms (6.75 ins) high.

Phillips Brothers, watchmakers and goldsmiths are known retailers of Thomas Cole's work and are listed as working from 31 Cockspur Street from 1839 until 1856, at which time they moved to number 23 Cockspur Street. From 1870 until 1902 they are listed as Phillips Brothers and Son, Art Goldsmiths, Coral Merchants and Watchmakers. The 31 Cockspur Street address on the current lot therefore dates this clock to no later than 1856.
