A remarkable early 20th century mechanical display timepiece with calendar, moonphase and tidal dials, all hand painted on seven white duck eggs

Invented and made by C.W.Croydon of Ipswich. Entilted 'We are Seven'
Each of the seven hollow eggs mounted vertically on a polished steel rod with blued steel collet and set behind a blued steel hand with hand-written titles offering Day, Month, Moon (with eight hand drawn phases of the moon), Tide, and hours, minutes and seconds. On a velvet-covered octagonal plinth to an ebonised wooden base to take the glass dome. The spring driven movement wound from below.
The base 26cms in diameter, the height including the dome 35cms (14ins).

Footnotes

The glass dome is set with an applied label 'WE ARE SEVEN'. Invented and made by the late C.W. Croydon. This possibly refers to the poem of the same title written by William Wordsworth in 1798.

Charles William Croydon (1868-1926) was a member of the British Horological Institute and ran the Ipswich shop Croydon's & Sons, a clock, watch and jewellery business.
