A rare late 18th century mahogany automata longcase clock

John Thompson, London
Surmounted by three ball-and-spire finials over an arched cornice supported on brass stop-fluted freestanding columns over a flame-veneered long door and plain base on double apron. The 12-inch arched dial set with a painted automata scene depicting a constantly rocking couple on a see-saw with a working windmill behind them; on the hour, an apparently shut door in the miller's house to the left opens and the miller appears dressed in his white clothes, all over a silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring, recessed subsidiary seconds dial and applied nameplate. The movement with five knopped pillars, anchor escapement and rack striking on a bell, the levers for the automata set behind the dial (sprung door in need of attention). Together with a brass-faced pendulum and brass-clad weights, crank key and some loose mouldings. 2.26m (7ft 5ins) high
