A Fine and Rare Chippendale Walnut Desk and Bookcase,

southern Virginia, c. 1760-1780.
The top section with a deep coved and dentil-molded cornice above two hinged doors with ogee-molded recessed panels opening to an interior of adjustable shelves; fallboard opens onto interior with central arched prospect door inlaid with a sun motif surrounded by inlaid herringbone bands and stringing, flanked by double-stepped tiers of valanced compartments, two small drawers, and four projecting shaped drawers; case of two thumb-molded short drawers and three long drawers on robust ogee bracket feet, 106cm wide, 60cm deep, 238cm high (42in wide, 24in deep, 94in high).

Per the consignor: "Bought from the dealer Katherine Turner in 1952 for $1,250. She had an inventory that stated 'Queen Anne secretary, belonged to Lady Astor from the Langhorn Estate in [Danville] Virginia." Nancy Langhorne, Viscountess Astor was the first woman seated in the British House of Commons.
