PASTEUR ADVISES ON A CASE OF RABIES.

PASTEUR, LOUIS. 1822-1895. Autograph Note Signed ("L. Pasteur"), 1 p, on gray note card, 70 x 110 mm, Paris, August 9th, [c. 1885], advising in the case of a child bitten by a dog. Float mounted, matted and framed, with an English translation printed on the mat. Light toning. Not examined out of frame.

"Have the dog examined..., " Pasteur writes, "If the dog (which should not be killed), lives 5 to 7 more days without symptoms of rabies, that means it was not rabid ... If the dog dies of rabies, send the child without delay to 14 Rue Vauquelin at 11 a.m." Pasteur, who pioneered the treatment and prevention of disease by recognizing the action of microbial organisms and their eradication, developed the first rabies vaccine along with Émile Roux, in 1885. 14 Rue Vauquelin was the location of the laboratory established around 1881 by Pasteur and Charles Chamberland for the production of vaccines of various types.
