2 volumes. Folio (282 x 196 mm). Original printed wrappers, uncut. Light finger soiling and edgewear, a well-preserved set in a custom cloth folding box.

First appearance of Lister's paper, which along with his previously published Lancet paper, "On a New Method of Treating Compound Fracture, Abscess, etc." "represent two of the most epoch-making contributions to surgery" (Garrison-Morton-Norman). "In this paper, Lister gladly acknowledged his debt to the writings of Pasteur, which had revealed to him both the causes of wound sepsis and the key to their elimination from hospitals (Norman). Lister's paper is pp 353-356 of no. XII and "Illustrations of the Antiseptic Principle in the Practice of Surgery" pp 668-669 of number XXII. Cushing L294; Garrison-Morton-Norman 5635; Norman 1367.
