LEEUWENHOEK, ANTHONY VAN. 1632-1723. Opera omnia seu arcana naturae. Leiden: Johannes Arnold Langerak, 1719-1730.
4 volumes. 4to (190 x 151 mm). 3 engraved frontispieces, engraved portrait in volume 3, 110 engraved plates, numerous engraved illustrations in text. Rebacked contemporary speckled calf, spines gilt in 6 compartments. Chipping around edges and corners of covers, corners bumped, toning and spotting throughout, heavy in places.

FIRST COLLECTED EDITION IN LATIN, with volumes 3 and 4 dated 1719, while volumes 1 and 2 are the revised 1722 editions, and with volume 1 containing the 1730 edition of Continuatio epistolarum. Leeuwenhoek published his letters individually beginning in 1684, but it was not until 1719 that he put out a collected edition of his works in Latin. Norman, 1301; Waller 10889; Wellcome III, 477.
