4to (255 x 203 mm). vii, [1], 126, 15, [37] pp. Contemporary full mottled sheep, spine gilt in compartments with raised bands, red morocco label, marbled endpapers. Some surface abrasion and peeling to sheep and wear to board edges, early ink note to flyleaf offset to title page.

FIRST EDITION of the first book printed for the blind, printed in a large raised italic type to be traced with the fingers. "In 1784 Haüy founded the Institution Nationale des Jeunes Aveugles, the first school for the blind, the goals of which were to teach the blind to read, write, and to play music. Haüy set forth his revolutionary teaching methods in his Essai sur l'éducation des aveugles, which showcased his system of printing for the blind while at the same time proving its efficacy, since the book was printed by Haüy's blind students under the direction of the royal printer Clousier" (Norman 1023).
