8vo (203 x 120 mm). 4 folding engraved plates. Contemporary blue paper wrappers, modern red cloth clamshell box. Wrappers browning and chipping, especially to spine, scattered browning and foxing.

FIRST EDITION of this collection of essays on Franklin's inventions and observations on a variety of topics. His description of the Gulf Stream is illustrated by one of the earliest maps showing the waterway—the map had been published in London in 1769, and again in Paris in 1770, but British sea captains continually ignored it.
