FIRST EDITIONS, the first attributed to Benjamin Franklin, of the story of the foundation of the first hospital established in America. "The Pennsylvania Hospital, incorporated in 1751, was the first permanent hospital built in the United States. Franklin was a prime mover in establishing the Hospital, soliciting matching funds from the citizens and Assembly, serving as its first secretary, and later presiding as chairman of its trustees. In 1754 when the hospital needed money, the trustees asked Franklin to write a brief history of the hospital's activities, as they felt they owed their supporters some account of their doings before soliciting further contributions (Norman). Samuel Rhoads wrote the continuation for the same reasons and modeled it on Franklin's original design. The Accounts are sometimes found bound together. A fine portrait of Benjamin Franklin (Florence, Lacinio, 1783) is inserted before title of the first Account. The first title one of 1500 copies, the Continuation one of only 500 copies printed. Howes F-331; Norman 831 and 832; Miller 587; Sabin 25588.
