Small 8vo (175 x 115 mm). vii, [1], 278 pp. Woodcut illustrations to text. Original embossed violet cloth. Some fading to spine and wear to spine ends, occasional spotting, old adhesive stain to front free endpaper.
Provenance: Oliver Wendell Holmes (presentation inscription); Carroll Atwood Wilson (bookplate).

PRESENTATION COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED TO FELLOW PHYSICIAN OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES SR. Inscribed on the front free endpaper: "Dr. O.W. Holmes / with the respect / of H.I.B." Bowditch was a pioneer in the diseases of the chest, who "established the stethoscope as a diagnostic tool in America" (Garrison-Morton-Norman 8587). This work contains "probably the best and most detailed descriptions of early pulmonary tuberculosis that had appeared in America or indeed in any country ... still stands as a masterpiece in the literature" (Brown, The Story of Clinical Pulmonary Tuberculosis, pp 185-190).
