8vo (234 x 150 mm). 280 pp. Three woodcut illustrations to text. Modern full brown morocco gilt, red morocco spine label. Foxed and toned.

PRESENTATION COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION: "To Dr. Mendell / with the respects of the Author" in a clerical hand. Beaumont was a U.S. Army surgeon from Connecticut and a veteran of the War of 1812. In 1822, while stationed at Michilimackinac, Michigan Territory, he treated an employee of the American Fur Company, Alexis St. Martin, who was wounded by an accidental shotgun blast. The injury left a permanent hole in St. Martin's stomach, which Beaumont used as an opportunity to study the digestive process over a period of ten years. A classic work in physiology.
