TERRAZZO FLOORS.

ROEDLICH, HIERONYMUS FRANZ. 1767-1833. Praktische Anweisung zur Verfertigung der venezianische Estriche. Berlin: C.A. Platen, 1810.
4to (265 x 205 mm). Text (foreword) in German, 24 hand-colored engraved plates on 12 leaves. Modern half morocco and marbled boards, ruled in gilt. Partially erased institutional stamps on verso of title page, margins somewhat trimmed, ink stamp to verso of last plate.

The illustrations depict the steps in laying a floor of granite or marble chips set in concrete and polishing it smooth. Excavations of classical Roman ruins in the late 18th century made Venetian-style terrazzo floors popular in Italy and Germany. The author was a Prussian military officer who observed the floors being made in Italy and wanted to introduce the technique to his native Prussia. Berliner Ornamentstichkatalog 2210.
