SURREALISM: STANLEY WILLIAM HAYTER.

HUGNET, GEORGES. 1906-1974; and STANLEY WILLIAM HAYTER, illustrator. 1901-1988. Ombres Portées. Paris: Éditions de la Montagne, [1932].
8vo. Illustrated with 5 original engravings by Hayter. Publisher's printed wrappers. Some wear to corners of wrappers, otherwise fine.

LIMITED EDITION, one of 20 copies hors commerce, of a total edition of 79, this example numbered H.C.XX, signed in pencil by both Hugnet and Hayter on the limitation page. Hugnet's surrealist poetry is complemented by Hayter's illustrations. Hayter was known as both a surrealist painter and skilled print-maker — his "Atelier 17" was the center of pre-war printmaking in Paris. His tenure in New York during the war years, at the New School for Social Research (now known simply as the New School) made him an influential figure in American printmaking, as well.
