3 volumes, folio (446 x 322 mm). 106 (of 118) hand-colored lithographic plates (first and second series complete, lacking title and last 12 plates of the third series), one unsigned, the others by and after W.H. Fitch, J.N. Fitch, James Andrews, J.L. Macfarlane, printed by West, Vincent Brooks or Vincent Brooks, Day & Son. Original cloth, the third series with original printed wrapper in place of the title, rebacked; some minor spotting.
Provenance: S.L. Courtauld (bookplate).

FIRST EDITION, comprising the complete first and second series (79 plates) as well most of the plates of the virtually unobtainable third series of Warner and William's work on newly imported orchid species, illustrated by William Hood Fitch, "THE MOST OUTSTANDING BOTANICAL ARTIST OF HIS DAY IN EUROPE" (Blunt & Stearn). The first series was published between 1862 and 1865 and includes 40 hand-colored lithographic plates. Several plates were drawn by Walter Hood Fitch, but the majority were by his nephew John Nugent Fitch (1840-1927) who succeeded him as botanical artist to the Botanical Magazine in 1878. J.
