Although heralded as one of the most prominent American jewellers working at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, Theodore B. Starr (1837-1907) started his career in the industry at the age of sixteen working as a messenger. After a thirteen-year partnership with Herman Marcus, Starr established his own firm in 1877, to much critical acclaim. Now working under the name T.B. Starr, the jewellery house experienced great commercial success, receiving recognition and praise by the press for Starr's unique and remarkable creations. His son joined the business in 1907 before it was sold in 1918. Starr's creations are still collected and displayed by several celebrated institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The seed pearl and diamond-set choker and bracelet combination presented here exemplifies the maker's fine craftsmanship and elegant designs.
