GRIMA: DIAMOND-SET JADE 'PEA POD' PENDANT/TORQUE, 1991

The jade carved to depict a ladybug crawling on a pair of pea pods, symbolising prosperity and wealth, accented by two brilliant-cut diamonds and suspended from a scrolling ribbon of similarly-cut diamonds, on a torque of hammered finish, pendant and torque signed Grima, diamonds approximately 2.85 carats total, lengths: pendant 10.9cm, torque inner diameter 12.5cm, maker's pouch

Footnotes

The jade pendant is illustrated in "Andrew Grima, Royal Jeweller: A Career of Fifty Years 1946 - 1996" (ill. no.56) on a different torque of brushed finish. The antique jade pea pod was sourced in San Francisco and the carving featured two small piercings, which enabled Grima to mount the jade onto the diamond surmount without compromising the original carving.

The design drawing for the jade pea pod pendant features in the exhibition catalogue, "Grima Retrospective", May 1991 (London: Goldsmiths' Hall) on page 62, no. 124.
