A large Fars gold and silver-inlaid brass bowl
Persia, 13th/ 14th Century

of compressed globular form tapering towards the everted flattened rim, profusely engraved and decorated with black composition with a band of inscription-filled cartouches interspersed by roundels containing seated rulers, further vegetal and geometric designs, later ownership inscription to base, remains of silver inlay and gold inlay to crowns, the interior with a roundel containing a stylised sun motif surrounded by concentric bands of fish, the fish in the first band interspersed by ducks, with early 20th century hand written note relating to the piece with description and owner's details
27 cm. diam.

Inscriptions: Al-'izz wa al-nasr [wa a] l-iqbal li-ni'am (sic)[wa al-ni'am?] la/ al-'ilm wa al-hilm [wa] al-daw/lat (sic) wa al-sa'adat (sic) [wa] salamah (sic) [wa a]l-'afiyah/ [wa] al-karam wa al-jud [wa] al-majd wa/ al-ifdal [wa] al-jadd wa / al-'alim [wa] al-'adil [wa]. 'Glory and victory and prosperity for grace (?) (or: and grace), knowledge and tolerance and wealth and happiness and well-being and health and generosity and liberality and splendour and excellence and rising (?) ... the learned,, the just and'; 'Its owner Muhammad Kazim'.
