A Khorasan niello bronze dish
Persia, 12th/ 13th Century

of shallow circular form with central stem surmounted by a poppy seed shaped finial, engraved, chased and decorated in niello with a band of stylised animated inscription on a ground of arabesque interlace, the central boss with foliate designs
11.5 cm. diam.

The function of these kinds of objects is uncertain, with suggestions including covers or lids for wide-mouthed pitchers (see M. Spink, Brasses, Bronze and Silver of the Islamic Lands, Vol. XI, Part Two, p. 432). A comparable example to the present lot is in the same publication, p. 433, cat. 309.
