A French mystery timepiece with square dial
Robert Houdin, Paris 'Fifth Series'
The engraved and cast brass frame surmounted by a blank shield cartouche with floral swags to either side, above the slender frame supported on a floral draped plinth, with wide brass base sunk into the substantial ebonised wood socle with three brass button feet. The Roman and Arabic clear glass dial signed Houdin Paris [rubbed] under pierced geometric painted steel hands. The spring barrel movement with jewelled cylinder platform escapement and monometallic balance, the backplate stamped Houdin. Ticking. 37cms (14.5ins) high
