Footnotes

Provenance:
with Wladimir Rosenbaum, Ascona, 1950s-1960s.
Mettler collection, St. Gallen, prior to 1978.
with Galerie Serodine, Ascona.
Private collection, Switzerland, acquired from the above 3 January 2011.

The Gela Painter was influenced by newer styles of vase painting and took this onto his mythical and genre scenes.

For another vase by the Gela Painter also depicting Dionysos on a kline with similarly painted drapery and hair wreath see J. Boardman, Athenian Black Figure Vases, London, 1991, img. no. 235. The Boardman example is a white ground lekythos which also depicts Ariadne who could have been featured in the now missing portion of the above vase.
