Cascata delle Marmore, outside of Terni was created by the Romans in 271BC and is still the tallest manmade waterfall in Europe at 650 feet. These falls were a popular subject for artists visiting Rome and in the 18th century were also painted by Orrizonte, Thomas Patch, Jacob Hackert and Carlo Labruzzi.
Châtelet repeated this composition, with the same arrangement of figures, on several occasions, including a slightly larger pair, oil on paper laid down on canvas, 93 x 62.2cm, offered at Sotheby's, London on 10 December 2015, lot 190. In the lower left corner of one of the present works is a group of elegant figures enjoying a picnic. On the ground next to them lies an artist's portfolio which may suggest that Chatelet himself was in the group (see: French Paintings of the Eighteenth Century, exh. cat., Paris, 1983, pp. 70-71, cat. no. 26).
